Why it’s hard to say no

Saying no is critical if you want to do meaningful work.

When you earn a reputation for getting things done, people will give you more tasks than you can handle. If you’re uncomfortable saying no, you won’t have time to focus on what’s important.

So why does saying no feel so difficult?

To answer this, consider the last time you were too sick to work.

Back then, it felt easy to say no. “Sorry, I can’t attend. I’m sick today.” There was no debate in your mind. There was no guilt. It was simple because you had a clear and justifiable reason.

If you’re struggling to say no, it may be a sign you’re not clear on your priorities. Because if you were sure you were working on the most important task, it would be easy.
